Creating Christmas Magic and Love In Our Home

Fresh scented pine, holiday stovetop potpourri, twinkle lights, candles, jingle bells, Christmas trees, cozy scarves and blankets, hot cocoa, and cranberry apple pie - all of my favorite Christmas things!

What is it about Christmas nostalgia and the magical feeling it brings??

I love to remember the reason for the season but, I also think it's a combination of many other special things: Spending time with loved ones, savoring good moments and food, feeling grateful for a year ending and another one coming, possibilities and dreams, and having a reason to make our homes a magical place!

In this post for my Seasons of Home series, I will share some of the ways we bring

Christmas magic into our home. See my previous post sharing our Farm Themed Christmas Tree

keeping it simple

Over the years I have transitioned to a ‘less-is-more’ approach when decorating our home and decorating for the holidays. In a world with so much noise and chaos (and a toddler!), I like to keep it simple at home without too much clutter.

So when I decorate, I like to keep it effortless and only add elements that I really love or have a special sentimental value to them.

I love to turn to nature for inspiration, using things all around us to keep it natural, more eco-friendly, and sustainable. I have a few pieces that I would use every year, like our wool Christmas stockings, star garland, candelabras, and bells. And then, I will add nature-inspired elements to complete the look!

I simply want to create a space where our family can feel at home, cozy up, and experience a little bit of extra magic during special holidays.

natural elements

It is amazing how many things you can find in nature once you actively search for them. Nature blesses us with so many beautiful things which we often take for granted and completely overlook.

Here are some great examples of nature-inspired decor elements:

  • Cedar natural garlands (you can buy them or attempt to make them yourself!)

  • Pine cones

  • Leaves and branches

  • Pompous grass ( this was my favorite addition this year)

  • Dried herbs

  • Fruit

  • Feathers

  • And so much more!

Natural Garlands

For this Christmas, I focused mostly on fresh, natural garlands made from cedar and fir from Lynch Creek Farm, a family-owned company. They make the most beautiful stuff!

These garlands provide a lovely scent, are a gorgeous green color, and drape so beautifully. They last about three weeks indoors if you follow the correct care guidelines. I love to always hang one around our fireplace mantel, our dining room arch, and gold mirror in the dining room.

Natural wreaths and mini trees

I also got a gorgeous Western Wildberry Wreath from Lynch Creek Farm. It is a focal point in our kitchen with an abundance of wintery creamy-white berries and natural pinecones.

Smaller wreaths and mini Christmas trees throughout the kitchen and living room lend colorful green touches and Christmas magic. These mini trees are just too cute and festive!

Pompous grass and POMEGRANATES

The pompous grass, with its beautiful cream/sand color, and pomegranates, with their striking pink-red colors, accentuate the Christmas theme.

The pomegranates add a wonderful pop of color to the kitchen! I love them so much that I may use pomegranates more in the future as decor!

Pompous grass looks gorgeous as a bunch in a vase or added to the garlands to make it a bit more visually interesting and adding texture.

traditional christmas elements

Unfortunately, some must-have Christmas elements like candles, twinkle lights, bells, and stockings can not be found in nature!

And what would Christmas be without these magical things?!

candles and twinkle lights

No matter the occasion, there should always be candles to create a cozy ambiance! And adding twinkle lights and star garlands for Christmas is a must to create that magic! I love how our star garland intertwines with the garland around the mantel.

Brass elements

A few brass elements, such as fun bells in various sizes, candle holders, and our vintage stove-top kettle, add a vintage touch to the decor and home. Bringing in some added bling and elegance.

christmas ornaments

What would Christmas be without some ornaments! And that’s not to say that they only belong on the tree itself. Mercury glass ornaments simply lain down or put in a bowl or vase can make a stunning feature.

I don’t usually add ornaments to the Christmas tree in our living room, but we do decorate the tree in Ava’s room with unique handmade ornaments. They all have a special meaning behind them, and she loves their playfulness!

Cozy Touches

Lastly, since it is winter, I make sure to add cozy touches to make the spaces feel warm and inviting. Wool Christmas stockings, throw pillows, chunky winter blankets, a burning fireplace, Christmas music, and stovetop potpourri ensure Christmas magic and love all around!

Whether you like to keep it simple too, or go all out with Christmas decor, do what makes your heart happy and what feels right! Don’t feel pressured to decorate or stress out' ‘cause family and friends are visiting.

Ultimately, it is about creating a space where you and your family feel safe and comfortable. It’s about creating memories and experiencing love and joy more than aesthetics.

Enjoy this holiday period, friend, and take it easy!

Love, Annette xx
