We have a total of 8 organic peach tree’s in our orchard and this is the first year they have given us peaches! We planted them three years ago and have been patiently waiting for the juicy, sweet, peaches to be ready. We purposely removed the blooms the first few years to allow the roots to develop fully and be their strongest.

Our peach tree’s are dwarf peach tree’s! It’s helped up manage them better when they are smaller.

( See more about our organic tree planning method HERE)

But last year a late frost took our blossoms and we were so sad. This year we barely missed one but they survived and now we have a beautiful harvest of peaches.

what WE’VE NOTICED HELPED OUR PEACH TREES STAY HEALTHY

We are by NO means experts. These are just things that have helped us and can maybe help you!

  • Lot’s of sunshine! I mean lots and lots. At least 6+ hours a day of sunlight is essential . We have two tree’s that were more shaded and they DID not do well. They are diseased and awful.

  • Prune the tree so that the inside branches are trim and the tree looks almost like an upside down umbrella. The tree’s that we trimmed the most are beautiful with lots of peaches. The tree that we did not trim as much and had lots of shade underneath has done very poorly. The fruit is diseased. We prune once a year. Here is a blogpost with more details on how we trim our trees. CLICK HERE

  • An area that drains well is key. The tree we have that did not do well was in an area that was more wet and did not drain well.

  • Ensure your soil has all the nutrients it needs. Fertilize with kelp, molasses, biochar, and Fruit Tree fertilizer such as the one from Down To Earth Fertilizers. Jared fertilizes the tree’s quarterly and more frequently during the summer months if needed.

  • When peaches are coming up pluck extra fruit so there is a space in between each one. This will allow them to grow adequately.

In summary. LOTS of sunlight and LOTS of pruning to the inside of the tree so sunlight can get in to every branch. That is what we have found to be key.

We have not had a true issue with birds ( I think because of our cats) But you can use some silver tape on each tree to deter the birds. See below for what we use.
