A Daily Tonic for Digestion, Hydration, and Gentle Energy
Spring tends to invite a different rhythm.
Lighter meals. Open windows. A sense that the body is ready to move again after a slower season.
This tonic fits into that shift without much effort. It’s something I reach for in the morning or just before a meal—a simple way to wake up digestion and support hydration at the same time.
Bright from the lemon, slightly sharp from the apple cider vinegar, softened with honey, and finished with beautiful edible flowers.
Nothing complicated. Just a glass that meets the moment.
Why This Combination Works
Each part of this tonic serves a purpose. Just simple ingredients that support the body in small, steady ways.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has long been used to support digestion. Its natural acidity can help stimulate stomach acid production, which aids in breaking down food. Many people also find it helps with circulation and that “sluggish” feeling, especially in the morning. You don’t need much; just a small amount is enough.
Lemon
Lemon signals the body to prepare for digestion. Its bright acidity encourages digestive juices and supports the liver’s natural processes. It also contributes vitamin C, which supports skin, connective tissue, and overall resilience.
Raw honey
Honey offers a gentle source of energy without being overwhelming. It also helps balance the sharpness of the vinegar and lemon. When raw, it carries trace enzymes and compounds that make it feel more like a food than just a sweetener. I used whipped honey for some extra fun!
Sea salt
A small pinch of high-quality sea salt helps replenish electrolytes. This becomes especially helpful in warmer weather, after sweating, or before something like a sauna. It supports hydration at a deeper level than water alone.
Mint
Fresh herbs like mint bring more than flavor. Mint, in particular, is known to help relax the digestive tract and ease occasional bloating. It adds a cooling quality that pairs well with the drink's acidity.
Together, this creates a tonic that supports digestion, hydration, and gentle energy — without relying on anything extreme.
the daily tonic recipe
I drink this tonic at different times, depending on when it feels most helpful.
In the morning, it can help wake up the digestive system before food.
About 20 minutes before a meal, it prepares the body to receive it.
And before a sauna, it supports hydration (in this case, you can reduce the apple cider vinegar slightly if preferred).
Ingredients
8–10 oz sparkling water
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon raw honey (whipped honey works well)
Juice of ½ lemon
Pinch of high-quality sea salt
Fresh mint (or basil)
Ice
Edible flowers (optional)
Instructions
Place the mint at the bottom of a glass and gently muddle to release its flavor.
Add the honey and apple cider vinegar.
Pour in the fresh lemon juice and add a pinch of sea salt.
Add the sparkling water.
Stir well until everything is combined.
Add ice. (I’ve used ice cubes with frozen strawberry puree for extra flavor and color.)
Finish with edible flowers, if you have them.
It’s a small thing, really. A glass of something thoughtfully made.
But over time, these small things become part of how the day begins and how the body is supported before anything is asked of it.
It’s these small daily habits, the work beneath the surface, that I’ve found make the biggest impact on my health in the long run.
Supporting better sleep, ensuring I get enough fiber, and the combination of protein and strength training have all also been small ways I’ve supported my health.
You just need daily, simple steps that eventually become second-nature habits.
